Peat is rich in bitumen, pectins, cellulose, humic acids, fulvic acids, lignins, phytohormones, and other compounds with biological activity. Inorganic substances are mainly macro and microelements.

Therapeutic peat is divided into high peat, transitional peat, and low peat. High peats are formed above the water table. 95% of this peat is organic, no more than 5% inorganic. Lowland peat forms in flooded lake basins, riverbeds, and anywhere water has deposited minerals. Lowland peat contains an average of 75% organic matter and 25% inorganic matter, making it highly mineralized.
