Butyric acid (or butanoic acid) should be short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are building blocks and fats necessary for proper cell function. It is the most important energy source for colonocytes (cells of the intestinal epithelium and colon).

Foods rich in fiber (including inulin) and certain probiotics can
increase its concentration in the body. Sometimes, however, its production in the colon is too low, which can lead to digestive disorders. In humans, its concentration also decreases with age. In such cases, butyric acid can also be administered orally. However, it is important that it reaches the intestines directly and is not digested in the stomach.
