Broccoli or asparagus cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. italica Plenck) is an annual plant that is a variety of cabbage. Considered the ancestor of cauliflower, broccoli likely originated in Cyprus. It was widely cultivated in ancient Greece and Rome. The name broccoli comes from the Italian word broccolo (Latin brachium), meaning branch or arm. It is a cultivated plant; it does not occur in the wild.
Broccoli is an extremely healthy vegetable, it has a beneficial effect, among other things, on the condition of the digestive tract, and its regular consumption can prevent many diseases. Due to its low calorific value, low glycemic index, and high protein content, green cabbage is particularly recommended for people who are losing weight. Broccoli is an excellent source of valuable vitamins - vitamins A, B, C, and K - and minerals - magnesium, calcium, sodium, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, and iron.
Broccoli can be eaten both raw and heat-treated. It is perfect as a healthy snack, as an addition to salads, soups or meat dishes.
