Dates are the stone fruit of the date palm. Date palms grow in large clusters and have been cultivated for 8,000 years. They are currently cultivated in Asia, the southern United States, and North Africa. They originate from the Middle East, and there are over 100 varieties of the palm tree. The name comes from the word "daktulos," which is derived from the Greek word for fingers.
