Liposomes are structures that spontaneously form from phospholipids. They are shaped like bubbles (0.01-1 micrometers in size) filled with water (or an aqueous solution), surrounded by a double lipid layer about 5 nanometers thick, hence their name phospholipid vesicles. Their envelope is similar to biological membranes. Phospholipid vesicles are biocompatible (made of the same components as the cell membranes in our body) and small enough to penetrate blood vessel walls.
