Lemon balm is a member of the Lamiaceae family, native to the Mediterranean region and known in Europe for centuries. For medicinal purposes, the leaves or the whole herb are harvested in June, before flowering. The sedative effect of lemon balm leaves is the best known. The active substances contained in the plant also have diastolic, carminative, lactobacillary, cholagogue, cholepoietic, and antiseptic effects. Lemon balm essential oil inhibits the growth of viruses, fungi, protozoa, and bacteria.
