Milk thistle is an herb that was used in ancient Greece and Rome and is still popular today. Milk thistle, or Sylibum marianum, belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean Sea, southern Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia such as India and Pakistan. It is an annual plant that blooms from July to August. Wild specimens can be found in Poland. The flowers are purple, and the plant can grow up to 2 meters tall.
The main active ingredient for which it is known is silymarin. However, it should be remembered that it is also a source of flavonoids, phytosterols, vitamins such as vitamins C and K, histamine, tyramine, tannins, mineral salts, and a high linoleic acid content. Silymarin protects against substances that can damage liver cells. It supports regeneration and can help detoxify the body. In addition, it influences the production of new liver cells. It can help reduce bilirubin, which is a pigment and affects the yellow tint of the skin and eyeballs. Sylibym Marianum can help with the negative effects of traveling by car or boat and with a lack of appetite. Flavonoids, along with vitamin C, have an antioxidant effect. They eliminate free radicals in the body that can have a negative effect on the human body. They also have a protective effect on the body's cells. Thanks to this, they support the immune system, have a positive effect on the condition of the skin and can inhibit the aging process.
Milk thistle oil is obtained by cold pressing milk thistle seeds (Silybum marianum L.). Selecting the highest quality raw materials, in addition to the latest pressing technology, is the key to success. Ripe, shiny, and optimally shaped - this is the best raw material for pressing such a valuable oil. A low pressing temperature (not exceeding 40°C) allows for the preservation of the most important active substances in this oil.
Milk thistle oil is characterized by a high content of unsaturated fats (80 g/100 g). In addition, it contains natural plant sterols (β-Sitosterol 38% and Δ ⁷ -Stigmasterol 22%).
Linoleic acid (LA) and plant sterols and stanols help maintain normal blood cholesterol levels.
