Although common oregano is naturally found in northern Europe, it was widely used by the Greeks and Romans in Antiquity. Lebiodora was already known to Aristotle, Hippocrates, and Dioscorides. Later, Paracelsus and Lonicerus, among others, wrote about it. Today, it is not only known in Mediterranean countries but is used worldwide.
Oregano oil is traditionally used to improve digestion, respiratory and immune functions, and for its antioxidant properties. It contains phenolic compounds, carvacrol and thymol, which scientists believe are responsible for oregano's beneficial properties. Carvacrol and thymol inhibit the growth of various bacteria and fungi and may help maintain a good balance of intestinal microflora and good digestion.

This is due to the synergistic action of phenolic compounds, particularly rosmarinic acid, which is also responsible for the antioxidant properties of rosemary.
