Compared to other European and tropical honeys, Manuka honey is mainly characterized by its indigenous origin. They only occur in a few regions of New Zealand that are a natural refuge for the rare shrubs of the genus Leptospermum scoparium. These are homogeneous honeys that have been produced exclusively in New Zealand, during the flowering period of Manuka shrubs, which consist mainly of the nectar of Leptospermum scoparium plants. These honeys must also be characterized by characteristics such as: an appropriate range of specific conductivity, a unique sac called mineral, slightly bitter; strongly aromatic scent with perceptible notes of damp earth and heather; the presence of pollen characteristic of Manuka shrubs and active ingredients, including: methylglyoxal (MGO ™).
MGO™ is short for Methylglyoxal - a natural substance recognized by scientists as a characteristic ingredient of Manuka honeys, which due to their high content stand out compared to other honeys available on the market. Manuka Health New Zealand is a pioneer and scientific leader in the MGO™ method and a leading exporter of high-quality Manuka honey. It was the first to introduce the determination of the commercial quality of Manuka honeys by measuring methylglyoxal - MGO™ (since 2007) and has had a significant impact on scientific and official work related to the quality of Manuka honeys in New Zealand and around the world.
