The brood is natural pollen, mixed with bee secretions and formed into what is called pollen swelling. That is why it has a much higher nutritional value than pollen itself.

The brood is stored in the hive under a layer of honey and wax so that air cannot penetrate it. It is then subjected to less suitable fermentation processes. It serves as a food source for young bees, larvae, and the queen.

Its composition is very rich and its components have very high assimilability. Scientific studies have shown that bees consuming brood are more resistant to microbial attacks and live longer than those feeding only on pollen.

The composition of the brood includes:

- proteins
- fats
- carbohydrates
- lactic acid
- enzymes
- vitamins: K, A, C, D, E, P, B vitamins
- minerals (notably selenium, magnesium, iron, silicon, sulfur, manganese).
