Coenzyme Q10 is also known as ubiquinone. It is found in all cells of the human body and is primarily involved in processes related to energy production in cells. It is particularly recommended for people over 40 to supplement their daily diet.
PQQ is a pyrroloquinoline quinone —a quinone molecule capable of reducing oxidants in our bodies. It is then recycled into its active form through the action of glutathione. In terms of structure and action, it resembles a vitamin. However, it is not included in this category of substances. PQQ is primarily a cofactor —a molecule that acts as an activator for enzymes that need help to function properly. This cofactor molecule transports electrons, which is crucial for the work of our energy-generating mitochondria.
PQQ was first recognized in 1964 as an enzyme cofactor in bacteria by biochemist Jens Hauge. It wasn't until 2003 that Japanese researcher Tadafumi Kato discovered that PQQ is also found in rodents and other mammals, including humans.
