Maca is an Andean plant from high mountain regions. Its Latin name is Lepidium meyeni . For over 2,000 years, it has been an important part of the diet of the inhabitants of Peru and Bolivia. Almost all parts of the plant are used; for example, maca roots can be boiled with porridge or fermented into beer, while the leaves are often eaten raw. During the Spanish colonization period, maca was so highly valued that it was used as currency. Legends say that the Incas used maca before battle to increase their fighting spirit, strength, and condition.
