Spirulina is a microscopic algae that grows in the waters of lakes in Africa and Central and South America. It contains up to 60% protein in its composition. It is a natural source of iodine, selenium, iron, valuable B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) and unsaturated fatty acids. The protein it contains consists of 18 amino acids, 8 of which are esogenic amino acids, i.e., those that are not produced by the body and must be supplied through food. Due to its high-quality protein, spirulina is popular in vegan and vegetarian diets.
Iron, the source of spirulina, plays a role in transporting oxygen to cells. It also participates in the production of red blood cells and hemoglobin and supports the proper functioning of the immune system. It's worth noting that the iron in this algae is better absorbed than that of animal origin.
Iodine contributes to the maintenance of normal cognitive function, nervous system function, and healthy skin. Selenium helps maintain healthy hair and nails, supports the proper functioning of the immune system and thyroid gland, and protects cells from oxidative stress.
