The nectarine (Prunus persica var. nucipersica) is a variety (or rather a group of varieties) of the common peach tree. It is distinguished from the peach by its thin, smooth, non-hairy skin and firmer, juicier, sweeter flesh.
The origin of the nectarine has long remained a mystery. It was suspected that it was the result of a cross between a peach and a plum, and it inherited the latter's smooth skin. However, genetic studies have shown that the nectarine lacks the characteristic foam due to the recessive gene responsible for this trait.
These fruits, associated with hot summer and holiday provisions, are characterized by a high amount of nutritional value, low in calories. There are about 44 kcal per 100 g of nectarine, it is also rich in vitamins A, E, K1, C, B1, B2, PP, B6, folic and pantothenic acid, as well as iron, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese and calcium. Nectarines are especially recommended for pregnant women, people losing weight - their glycemic index is only 35, and their fiber content is sustainable - and people who do sports.
Nectarines are very popular eaten raw as a snack, but they can also be a delicious accompaniment to desserts, pancakes, cakes, ice cream, salads and even meats.
